O'Keeffe Poppies (Playing with warm colors)

Taking inspiration from Laura over at Painted Paper we created some Georgia O'Keeffe inspired poppies.

Materials

• Red and Black construction paper
• warm colors of paint
• brushes
• scissors
• glue

The first step was to paint the red paper with the warm colors... mixing and experimenting as we went along.

Next we cut traced 2 sides of a cup to have a larger circle and a smaller circle.

Then we cut slits in the circle careful to not cut through the inner circle.

Last after gluing the circles to the center of the red paper we cut out poppy shapes and displayed them on the wall.

The Great Weather Unit... Part 3

Today we made pinwheels... a fun little way to explore the wind and experiment with air pressure.  

It really is an art to figure out just the right balance of breath to make the paper spin around.

We used the pinwheel template from the free weather unit over at 123 Homeschool 4 Me. (Seriously this unit has printables for preschool to grade 4... Wonderful!)

After designing the pinwheel we attached them to pencil erasers with tacks.  (Which makes them not exactly 3 and under friendly)

The kiddos used a brief window of opportunity when it wasn't raining outside to run around and make their new toys spin in the breeze they created.

van Gogh 2 Sunflowers

Once again inspired by For the Love of Art, which has so many ideas for art projects with famous artists in mind... we created Sunflowers.

First we drew the vase and flowers with pencil on watercolor paper... and then traced the pencil lines with black Sharpie markers.

Then we busted out the watercolor pucks and watercolor pencils... the results are breath taking...

What We Sent Our Compassion Kids (March)

Ok I get seriously excited about creating our once a month packages to send to our Compassion kids... and so do the Scott kiddos...
This month we are sending off a fun maze...

Some beautifully decorated Easter eggs... colored by Meadow

I love these origami butterflies and Hudson is a pro at folding them...

and of course a letter...

van Gogh The Starry Night (Part 1)

The story of van Gogh is certainly a tragic one... His work however is extremely beautiful and moving...  To start our study I had each kiddo look at this optical illusion which really brings The Starry Night to life

Next up we used this Starry Night project idea posted by For the Love of Art to create our own StarryNights..

 Even daddy got it on swirling blue paint...

Our second Picasso inspired art project actually took three days to complete... I am astounded at the attention to detail that Hudson and Meadow put in to these paintings... and I honestly really enjoyed painting along with them...

Picasso Part 1

We are doing something I never really thought we would do... We are studying ART! Inspired by the World's Greatest Artist  package over at Confessions of a Homeschooler and a few great Pinterest ideas and we are off...

First Artist: Picasso

Can you guess who is hiding behind these funny faces?  I found these templates and printed the older children's on water color paper... so we could use paint to jazz them up a little... before glueing on cutouts of eyes noses and mouths.  Delaney's is on plain paper... she used markers for her ahem jazzing.

They were oodles of fun!


 

What We Sent Our Compassion Kids... February

My kiddos are so excited about our Compassion Kids writing day and this is only our second scheduled one! So quick recap on what's going on... the 6th of each month we have set aside to write to the children we have sponsored through Compassion International.

This month we are sending off a package about where  live... We included a map of Canada and a couple of postcards:

Each of the older children did a drawing of their favorite place in our town:

And a letter written on beautiful free printable stationary.

What We Sent Our Compassion Kids... January

We have set a goal to send mail to our Compassion International kids on the 6th of each month... I have it marked on my phone calendar... and hopefully a monthly post here of what we sent will go a long way in keep us on track with this endeavor...

So here's what we sent in January:

First up Hudson and Meadow painted these Valentines Templates... (I have been itching to have them do this project since I pinned it months ago).

We also sent a snowman building activity:

What do you send your Compassion Kids?

... Because It's Not Just a Snowman.

This is a work of art... painstakingly sculpted... even delaying lunch just to get it finished...

This is a science experiment... riddled with trial and error...  remaking snowballs crushed under the weight of the one above stronger...

This is physical education... rolling the the ever growing snowballs... walking on his knees in winter gear... stomping through the deep snow to find arm branches.

This is math... sequencing size... comparing the bottom to the top...

This is a morning well spent.

In celebration of Emily Carr's 142nd birthday (thank you Google) I have a couple of works of art my children created with inspiration from Ms. Carr's paintings...

If You Give Some Kids A Bunch of Craft Supplies...

If you give some kids a bunch of craft supplies and say "Go on create"...
 they make look at you blankly and just decide to wait.
Until you give directions... for the craft of the day.
Because you see my children rarely get just time to play...
with stickers and sparkles and markers and glue...
they are waiting for me to tell them exactly what to do.

Eventually they make a move and start to chose some paper...
as you tell them "There's no step by step" they become the art creators.

So dabbers dab and and scissors snip... and it soon becomes clear...
This open ended art thing should be the norm... and not just once a year...

 

Great Grinchy Goodness!

A couple of fun and festive little art projects we have done to go along with How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Classic Seuss) ( I appear to be quite into alliteration today).

For the first I had my children draw what they thought Whoville is like while I read the book to them... no peeking at the illustrations.

Our next project was super fun and I just love how it turned out... these little toilet paper roll houses totally reminded me of Who houses... So we created our own little 3D Whoville.

Aren't they just darling?  So cute!
