A Poppy Is To Remember

Today we used a really fantastic Remembrance Day resource from Teachers Pay Teachers based on the book A Poppy Is To Remember.
Since we had friends over to learn with I decided to work together as a group on some charts...
The words written in black marker are things the children knew about Remembrance Day before we started... the blue marker is what they learned.

As well as individual activities...
Working on their Remembrance Day booklets at the kitchen table...
Drawing features on a person outline to make a picture of themselves wearing a poppy.
Drawing pictures in a wreath of who we remember with the poppy.

The kiddos also cracked a code to reveal a Remembrance Day fact.

Wants and Needs

We have had some fun schooling with friends this week... Rachel came over and created a wants and needs collage with Meadow.

Each girl cut out pictures of things they NEED...   They chose:
Food
Water
Air
Clothes
A house
Love

For WANTS they cut out:
Dolls
Games
A Christmas Tree
Cupcakes and Goodies

Spontaneous Learning Opportunities

I LOVE spontaneous learning opportunities! Like just last week or so Meadow sounded out and read a STOP sign... YAY!
Yesterday I gave Hudson the opportunity at the Wildlife Park to guide us around using a park map...

And we're off to the raccoon home...!
But the very best spontaneous part of this adventure was that my sweet friend Twyla called the evening before to tell me that she was headed here from Vanderhoof... so we met up at the zoo...

And watching the bears wrestle was pretty awesome too... :)

The First Day of School

Our first day of school this year was not a grand event... in fact it just happened to be a day when Hudson was feeling a little under the weather... and outside play would not be great idea...
So we started...
On the floor of my bedroom... with a map to color and a dry erase book to trace in...
The simplicity was refreshing... there was no wining about about a "special project" gone wrong... and I did not hear "Do I have too?" once.  Not a single Pinterest idea in sight.
And it was beautiful and peaceful... It was relaxed and interesting... just as I hope the rest of the year will be.

Winner and a Favourite Photo

The winner of the My Memories giveaway was Tamara Flundra.
People were having a hard time viewing and commenting on my blog... any guesses why anyone?

We are in the middle of a study on Canada and this is one of my favourite pictures this week.
Hudson is putting star stickers on the map to show the places we have gotten postcards from so far.  If it was not so freezing cold the past few days we would have probably been able to check the mail for more post cards.  So if you have sent us one please be patient we will get your star up asap.

Post Office Play

Last week we went on a field trip to the post office with our homeschool group... Do you think I remembered my camera? No :(
But I do have pictures of the post office play we did before the tour.
First we wrote pretend letters.

Then colored some stamps onto envelopes.
Then the post mom with her reusable mail bag delivered the mail to each child's "house" (bedroom).

How fun to get mail... even if you sent it yourself.

We also received some sweet swag from the post office...
Tattoos!!!
